Aerial filming, drone video and property photos

Drone filming
on Sylt

Aerial footage of the island we live on. Drone video in cinema quality, aerial property photos, construction progress and event footage, bookable on their own without a whole film production around them. And the part where most people fail: national park, nature reserves and flight permits are cleared in advance, not at the launch site.

What we shoot

What we film on Sylt from the air

Drone photography and drone video from one team, bookable as a standalone drone service. Aerial shots are not an end in themselves. They show something you cannot see from the ground: location, size, context, space. Everything else belongs on the ground. Each of these types of footage can be booked on its own, without a film production around it.

Aerial video for websites and social media

A short, fully edited film made only from aerial footage. Enough for a home page, a Reel or an ad, and it needs no production around it.

Hotels, restaurants and holiday homes

House, garden, pool, the edge of the dunes and the distance to the beach in a single camera move. It answers the question every guest has before booking.

Aerial property photos

High resolution stills for property brochures and portals, taken from a low height so the property stays large and the location is still easy to read.

Construction progress and project documentation

The same frame at fixed intervals, over months. You get a building record, a time lapse and marketing material, all from one booking.

Events

Flights over the grounds, the stage and the audience, where permitted. Where not, we use high camera positions on the ground instead of taking the risk.

Roof inspection and building check

Roof, chimney, facade and gutters seen up close, without scaffolding and without a ladder. After a storm, before a purchase or to prepare a renovation. You receive the images sorted and labelled.

Construction documentation and site monitoring

Construction progress at fixed intervals from the same position, plus stills for the building record and handover. The same flights also give you material for marketing.

Coast, dunes and landscape

For tourism, campaigns and stock footage. Only ever where a permit is in place, because this is the most sensitive part of the island.

For real estate, video and high resolution photos come from the same flight, taken from a low height so the property stays large and the location is still easy to read. If you also want interior shots and a ground camera: Real estate film on Sylt.

The honest part

Where can you fly a drone on Sylt?

Sylt is one of the most strictly protected areas in Germany. Anyone who takes off here without checking first risks a fine that can be very high in serious cases. That is why we answer this question before the quote, not afterwards. How an application works, which documents are needed and what it costs is explained on the page Drone permit for Sylt.

Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park

The entire Wadden Sea east of the island lies within the national park (Nationalpark Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer). Operating drones there is prohibited in principle, regardless of weight, so this also applies to devices under 250 grams. An individual permit from the national park authority, subject to a fee, is possible in individual cases, mainly for film and television productions. Over protection zone 1, over seal resting sites and over moulting areas, permits are not granted as a rule.

Nature reserves on the island

Large areas on land are also protected, including Nord-Sylt with the Listland, the Braderuper Heide, the Morsum-Kliff, Baakdeel-Rantum, the Rantumer Dünen, the Rantumbecken and Nielönn. Taking off over these areas requires permission from the responsible nature conservation authority. The legal basis is, among other things, Section 21h of the German Air Traffic Regulations (Luftverkehrs-Ordnung) in conjunction with the respective nature reserve ordinances.

Westerland airport

Sylt Airport has a control zone (Kontrollzone) covering a considerable part of the centre of the island. Within this zone, take off is only permitted with the consent of air traffic control, and clearance depends on current flight operations. For shoots in Westerland, Tinnum and the surrounding area we plan for this in advance instead of improvising on the day.

Towns, villages and private property

Residential properties with buildings enjoy their own protection, and the neighbours' personal rights also apply. For filming in public spaces, the municipality of Sylt (Gemeinde Sylt) also requires a special use permit (Sondernutzungserlaubnis). On private land we need the written consent of the owner, and for hotels and holiday resorts the consent of the management.

In short

The status of an area is shown on the official map of the German digital platform for unmanned aviation at dipul.de. Whether flying is allowed there is decided by the responsible authority, and depending on the location there may be several at once. You do not have to work through this yourself: send us the address and purpose, and within one day we will tell you whether, and under which conditions, a drone can fly there. For individual permits, two to six weeks of lead time is realistic.

Certificates

As the client you need none of this. It is listed here because it shows whether a provider works properly.

Operator registration with the Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt), e-ID visible on the drone.

EU proof of competency A1 and A3 as the minimum requirement, EU remote pilot certificate A2 for flights at a shorter distance from uninvolved people, the practical standard in towns and villages.

Liability insurance that explicitly covers commercial operation.

Permits depending on location: flight permit (Aufstiegserlaubnis), individual nature conservation permit, special use permit, access permit. We handle all of it. You sign nothing and apply for nothing.

Costs

How much does drone filming on Sylt cost?

We have been making films since 2019 and have been based on Sylt since 2024. So there are no travel or accommodation costs, which make up the largest part of the bill with providers from the mainland. You will not get a standard price list, but a quote in which every item is listed individually.

Compact flight session

One property, one appointment, around two hours on site. Result: a short edited aerial film and a set of photos. The usual starting point for real estate and small businesses.

Several properties or a full day

Several properties or locations in one day, on request with additional ground footage and interviews. The result is a complete film rather than just a view from above.

Series and documentation

Recurring sessions over weeks or months for construction projects and campaigns. Calculated as a package and considerably cheaper per session.

Permit fees charged by the authorities are passed on at cost and listed separately. What your project actually costs depends on location, permit situation, scope and editing effort.

FAQ

Drone filming on Sylt, answered briefly

Are you allowed to fly a drone on Sylt?

On parts of the island yes, on large parts no. Taking off and flying over the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and over the island's nature reserves is prohibited in principle, regardless of the drone's weight. Over towns and villages, business parks, hotel grounds and private property, flying is permitted if a remote pilot certificate, operator registration, insurance, the landowner's permission and, depending on the location, an official exemption are in place. We check every location before the shoot and attach the documents to our quote.

Can I book drone filming only, without a full film production?

Yes, that is actually our most common job: one appointment, aerial shots only, video and photos, fully edited. You do not need a script, an interview or a ground camera. If you also want shots on the ground, we take them during the same appointment, but it is not necessary. And if a bigger film is to follow later, the aerial footage will fit in, because we work in the same look.

How do I find out where drones are banned on Sylt?

The binding information comes from the German digital platform for unmanned aviation (Digitale Plattform Unbemannte Luftfahrt) at dipul.de. It shows the geographical UAS zones on a map: nature conservation areas, the national park, airport control zones, federal waterways and other restricted areas. For Sylt you can see straight away that the Wadden Sea, the protected dune areas and the area around Westerland airport are subject to special rules. The map does not replace a permit, it only shows where you need one.

What is the difference between a general permit and an individual permit?

A general permit (Allgemeingenehmigung) is a permission from the aviation authority that is valid over a longer period for recurring standard cases, for example commercial operation in certain scenarios. An individual permit (Einzelgenehmigung) is issued for a specific place, a specific period and a specific purpose; it is subject to a fee and needs lead time. For the nature reserve and the national park on Sylt, an individual permit from the responsible nature conservation authority is always required before a drone may take off at all. In practice, several documents are layered on top of each other for one shoot day, and this is exactly the bundle we organise.

Do I need a drone licence for drone filming on Sylt?

As the client you need nothing at all, that is entirely our responsibility. Anyone who flies needs to be registered as an operator with the Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) with the e-ID displayed on the drone, the EU proof of competency A1 and A3 obtained through an online test, and for flights closer to uninvolved people the EU remote pilot certificate A2, which requires an exam in person or online at a recognised body. On top of that comes liability insurance that explicitly covers commercial operation. For filming in the national park or in nature reserves a licence alone is never enough; there the nature conservation authority decides.

How much does drone filming on Sylt cost?

A compact drone session on Sylt with a fully edited short film usually costs somewhere between the mid hundreds and the low thousands of euros; a full shoot day with ground and aerial footage costs more. On Sylt there are no travel or accommodation costs because we live here, which is why the entry price is low. Permit fees charged by the authorities are passed on at cost and listed separately. You will not get a standard price tag, but a written quote within 48 hours of our first conversation, with every item listed individually.

How quickly can I get an appointment on Sylt?

For areas without protected status usually within a few days, because we are based on the island and do not have to plan any travel. As soon as an official exemption is needed, allow two to six weeks for processing. Weather is the second factor, so we set a backup window rather than forcing a date. We can often still fit in requests at short notice for building handovers or property viewings.

Do you also take aerial photos of properties?

Yes, from the same flight as the video. For property brochures, estate agent portals and websites we deliver high resolution stills from five to twenty metres up, plus the classic overview showing location, plot boundary and surroundings. Height matters: a thatched house in Keitum looks good from twelve metres, from eighty metres it disappears. On request we add plot boundaries and labels to the image.

What quality do you deliver the aerial footage in?

Video in 4K, on request in higher resolution for reframing, colour corrected and in the same look as our ground footage. Photos as high resolution JPG files, on request also as RAW. We shoot so that one flight can be cut into 16:9 for websites and television, 9:16 for Reels and Stories, and 1:1 and 4:5 for the feed. We fly current professional camera drones, for example the DJI Mavic 4 Pro.

What happens if the wind is too strong?

On Sylt that is not an exception but part of the planning. With every booking we set a backup window and decide on the morning of the shoot based on the forecast. If the flight is called off, we move it into this window without charging for a second appointment. This is stated in the quote, so nobody is left stranded by a cancellation.

Can you fly over the beach and over people?

Flying over crowds of uninvolved people is prohibited, on the beach just as in the pedestrian zone. Flying over individual uninvolved people is only allowed within narrow limits and depends on the drone class and the remote pilot certificate. In practice we work with cordoned off launch sites, shoot at quiet times of day and plan flight paths over water or open ground. Where that is not possible, we replace the aerial shot with a high camera position on the ground.

Does the ban also apply to drones under 250 grams?

In the national park and in nature reserves, yes. The 250 gram weight limit relates to the rules of the open category; it does not override the protected status of an area. Anyone launching a small drone over the Wadden Sea risks the same fine as with a large one. The nature conservation authorities justify this with the disturbance of breeding, resting and moulting areas as well as seal resting sites.

Who owns the footage in the end?

You receive comprehensive usage rights to the finished films and photos for the agreed channels, set out in writing in the quote. Raw footage and project files stay archived with us. The practical advantage: if you later need another version, a reframe or an extra still, we go to the archive instead of flying again. For Sylt we also have our own archive of aerial footage that can be licensed.
