How much does film production on Sylt cost?
It depends on the film, not on the island. As a guide: a real estate film starts at €1,900 per property, a recruiting film with one filming session starts at €3,400, and a short ENG assignment for broadcasters starts at €750, each plus VAT. Corporate films and documentaries are priced by scope. There are no travel costs on Sylt because we live here. You receive a binding written quote within 48 hours of the first call.
Do I need a filming permit on Sylt?
For small shoots with a handheld camera or tripod that do not obstruct anyone, usually not. As soon as sets, lighting, barriers or vehicles are used on public land, you need a permit: in Westerland, Tinnum, Keitum, Archsum, Morsum, Munkmarsch and Rantum from the island administration of the municipality of Sylt (Gemeinde Sylt), and in Kampen, Wenningstedt-Braderup, List and Hörnum from the relevant municipality within the Amt Landschaft Sylt. Residents must be informed at least five days in advance. We submit the applications and handle the coordination.
Can you film with a drone on Sylt?
On parts of the island, yes. Flying over the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and over nature reserves such as Nord-Sylt, Braderuper Heide or Morsum-Kliff is prohibited without an individual permit, and there is a control zone around Sylt Airport in Westerland. Over commercial sites, hotel grounds and private property, flights are possible with a remote pilot certificate, insurance, the owner's consent and, depending on the location, approval from the authorities. We check every location before we send a quote and tell you in advance which aerial shots are realistic.
When is the best time of year to film on Sylt?
For most subjects, May, June and September: soft light, long days and beaches that are still or once again empty. July and August are beautiful but busy, which is ideal for event films and difficult for calm brand imagery. Winter delivers rough, dramatic images that hardly anyone shows, with short days that need to be planned for.
What happens if the weather is bad on the shoot day?
We plan outdoor shots with two weather windows and decide the day before. If it rains, we bring indoor shots and interviews forward. Because we live on the island, postponing does not mean paying for another journey. That is exactly the difference from a crew from the mainland that has to shoot on a fixed day, whatever the sky looks like.
Do you also work as a service production company for crews from the mainland?
Yes. Agencies, production companies and brands book us on Sylt for location scouting, permits, cast and contributors, camera, sound and drone. We work under our own name or quietly in the background and deliver to your brief, your technical specifications and your deadline.
How quickly can you be on location for breaking news on Sylt?
On the island, usually within minutes. A crew from Hamburg needs around four hours to reach Westerland, including the car train. For newsrooms we deliver footage on the same day, assembled on request, graded to Rec. 709 with levelled sound, or as a finished news piece.
How long does a production take from enquiry to finished film?
Usually three to six weeks. The first call takes 15 minutes, the written quote follows within 48 hours, filming usually takes half a day and postproduction two to four weeks. Each person is only in front of the camera for 20 to 30 minutes. For events and campaign launches it can be faster, and we tell you in advance whether your date is realistic.
Do I also get vertical videos for Instagram and TikTok?
Yes, from the same shoot and at no extra charge. We always film in 4:3, which gives more image area at the top and bottom. From that we cut 16:9 for websites and television, 9:16 for Reels, Stories and TikTok, and 1:1 and 4:5 for the feed, without cutting off anyone's head.
Can my film also be shown on television?
Yes. We are a media partner of the TV Sender Sylt1, which reaches around 12.5 million households in Germany, Austria and Switzerland via cable, MagentaTV, Vodafone, Zattoo and waipu.tv. In addition, there is addressable TV on RTL, VOX and n-tv, which can be targeted by location and postcode, with a starter package from €3,180.
Is there ready made stock footage of Sylt to license?
Yes. Our footage catalogue contains aerial and ground footage of the whole island in 4K, from Hörnum Odde to the west beach, available to license directly. It is worth it when things need to move fast or a dedicated shoot day does not fit the budget.
Who owns the footage at the end?
You receive comprehensive usage rights to the finished films and photos for the agreed channels, set out in writing in the quote. Raw footage and project files stay archived with us. The practical advantage: if you later need a different version or a new format, we go back to the archive instead of shooting again.
